Membership of Onneley Golf Club Seniors is open to all five-day and seven-day members, men and women, aged 55+.
The section meets on nearly every Wednesday morning throughout the year with allocated Tee time slots between 8.30am – 10.00am. The year is split between Winter (October – March) and Summer schedules.
The Winter schedule centres around eight Singles Stableford events, usually non-qualifying for handicap purposes, which comprises the Winter League. The league winner is the player with the best five of eight scores achieved. Other Wednesdays see a mix of formats, including pairs and team games.
We run an Xmas Bonanza where all players can expect a prize – but beware of finishing last!
The Summer schedule is of course busier. The section runs a full schedule of 12 friendly inter-club matches (6 home and 6 away) between late March and early October. Teams being played in 2025 are:- Barlaston, Congleton, Hawkestone Park, Malkins Bank, Sandbach, and Stone.
In parallel a new Senior (Male) Veterans Team organised by Roy Mills with 16 scheduled fixtures, (8 home and 8 away), runs mainly in the Summer season. Home games are usually on Tuesday afternoons; away games dictated by away clubs, and are often on Fridays.
There is also a Summer singles KO tournament, the Kennedy Trophy, with up to 64 entries on a first-come, first served basis, with full handicap difference allowed, and maximum WHS handicaps of 28 for men and 36 for women. These games can be played at any time, and usually not on Wednesday mornings, when the section members compete in a variety of competitions.
These comprise four named trophies – the Callister Cup and Kev Thomas Memorial singles Stablefords, George Broadhurst Pairs, and the Brian Salsbury 3 clubs and putter competition; the home team matches (and informal roll-ups for other members on those dates); monthly medals; Stablefords; and various pairs or team formats.
On behalf of the club, the section also manages the nomination process for Senior Golfer of the Year (SGOTY), which leads to nomination as the club’s senior representative at the prestigious JCB annual Open Event at Uttoxeter. This comprises separate tournaments on one day for men, women, juniors and male seniors. The title will be bestowed on the person with the lowest aggregate nett score in three of four tournaments, with four Wednesday games and four Friday medals identified as the qualifiers for members and non-members respectively.
Membership of the senior section is subject to a token annual fee of £5 which contributes to the Xmas Bonanza, and other nominal prizes.
There will be a Senior Captain’s Away Day around May/June, final Date/Time/Venue to be announced.
The Senior’s Notice Boards in the Club House display all the forthcoming events, competition sign up sheets, and results. The club operates the BRS golf booking system online for all other times during the week.
The section is overseen by the Seniors Organising Committee (SOC) who meet regularly to ensure the smooth running of the section.
The Committee comprises the following members:-
Senior Captain - Martin Kendrick
Senior Vice Captain - Kevin Boal
Comp Organiser - Chris Grehan
Comp Organiser - Roger Till
Treasurer - Mike Parker
Past Captain - Nigel Davies
Board Member - Mel Simons
We are also grateful for additional help outside the Committee from Past Captains Malcolm Hulme, Pete Bowers, Steve Nelson and Steve May. Particular mention must go to our outgoing Chairman Sandy Calder who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes on Seniors behalf, and has put together a great deal of the administration that we now regularly use.
I am sure our Section will continue to go from strength to Strength with your ongoing support.
